Which Protein Powder is The Best?

In this blog post, we will tell you which protein powder is best for you. We are specifically going to talk about different types of Whey protein. This is because for most people, Whey is the best quality protein, plus it's relatively affordable.

First off, what is whey protein? ‘Whey’ is a byproduct of cheese. Refine this into a powder and you get whey protein powder. This is why we don’t really refer to whey protein as a supplement, but more of a performance food. If whey is a supplement, then by that logic cheese is also a supplement!

Whey protein is the most bio available type of protein powder. It is a ‘complete’ protein and includes all the essential amino acids. In simple words, this means it is a higher quality protein. It’s a great 'whey' to get extra protein for those who struggle to hit their protein targets. (see what I did there??)

But now for the confusing part. There are 3 types of whey protein. Here’s how to know which one is for you:

Option 1: Standard Whey Protein

This is the cheapest and for most people, it is perfectly fine and is the best bang for your buck. 90% of you reading this will do best on a standard whey protein. As long as you find it yum, it’s not super high in calories and it doesn’t have a lot of ‘filler’ ingredients, it’ll work great. This is what we eat.

Option 2: Whey Isolate

Some of you have trouble digesting lactose. For you, a whey isolate would be better. Whey isolate is just an isolated or more refined version of Whey. It’s a bit more expensive, but it’s also a bit better quality. This means it has a higher protein to calorie ratio and generally has more protein per serve. Great if you have trouble digesting lactose, or if you want a better quality protein and don’t mind spending a bit extra.

Option 3: Whey Hydrolysate

This is the most expensive style of Whey, and definitely the hardest to pronounce. (hydrosylate? Hydrolysate? Hydroslylate?? Who knows).  A very small percentage of you will even have trouble digesting whey isolate. If this is you and you have a very sensitive stomach, give Whey Hydrolysate a go. This is a predigested form of whey protein which means almost everyone can tolerate it. It’s more expensive again, so only really necessary for people with gut issues.

Option 4: Other Protein Powders

There are many many other types of protein powders and various protein blends. Too many for us to cover in this little blog. So if you’re going to try a protein powder and you’re not sure whether it’s a good one or not, send us a pic and we’ll check it out for you. Also if you want a blog post on any other supplement, let us know!
